Environmental Justice Committee
In 2023, BPSADC became the first ever Black-led organization to intervene in both the Alliant and MG&E cases before The Public Service commission (PSC).
Taking action on this issue
- Our primary goal is for MG&E and Alliant utility companies to
create and implement programs to address the unaffordability of gas and/or electric bills for energy-burdened customers
in their respective territories.
- Homes with a high energy burden pay more than 6% of their income on energy bills; those who live in low income or “targeted” neighborhood’s
pay 20%-32% of their income on ga and electric. This results in energy inaccessible to hundreds of families around Greater Madison, many of whom are historically underrepresented and marginalized.
As a result of BPSA’s activism the PSE opened two dockets to further investigate and create an affordability (MG&E) and expand (Alliant) an arrearage program.
BPSA led the charge to defend family’sability to pay their utility bills caused by the rise in the cost, to heat their homes and/or apartments.
Energy is one of the three or four largest expenses in their monthly budget along with housing, food and transportation. BPSADC advocates for Black and Brown low and moderate-income ratepayers…And against the monetary profits of
shareholders and the utilities top executives.
We are also working in areas deemed low-income, where apartment residencies are exposed to PFAS – a compound like mercy that was found in the lakes around low homes/apartments on the East side of Madison where children play and families live.
Energy Burden is considered to be 6% of your income. Our low and moderate income households in some neighborhoods are paying up to 32%! This is outrageous!
