Education Committee

The Education committee is one of our largest and most active committees within the organization.

We are currently working with parents, and school personnel to understand the needs of both parents and staff in better educating our children.

This initiative is called FACES. Each letter stands for an element of the Framework initiative. We are looking at specific areas of focus:

Taking action on this issue
  • F – Financial;
  • A – Academic;
  • C – Communication;
  • E – Expectations;
  • S – Study Success.

Each of these elements has a specific rationale and BPSADC request:

F – establish a yearly general fund budgetary line item focused on Black Excellence.

A – make 10% improvement in Black students moving up a level of reading proficient on the Forward exam and make 1-point improvement on average ACT composite score.

C – commit to participate in the annual Black Parents’ Summit and quarterly follow up meetings with BPSADC.

E – continuous improvement in working with black children and families regarding the reduction of black professionals in instructional positions and improvement of climate study of black students, families and staff.

S – participation in the convening of stakeholders interested in studying the success of black students on standardized exams, in advanced coursework and in co-curricular activities.

The Black Parent Summit that was held in April, 2024 produced heartfelt, vigorous and challenging dialogue in which three (3) themes emerged:

  • Black parents and families need more support if they are to fulfill their roles as the primary teachers and counselors of their students.
  • MMSD needs to hire more Black teachers and provide more training to non-Black staff to build the district’s capacity to treat Black students and families with the respect need to improve educational, career and social-emotional outcomes.
  • BPSADC needs to take a more asset-based approach in its educational advocacy for Black students and families, which should include modifying the FACE framework to a FACES framework which also studies success.
  • Planning a mid-year summit for parents to follow up for the fall school year and an end of year summit.
